What a finish to the US - Puerto Rico WBC game!! If you missed it, David Wright dropped a bases loaded looper down the line to score two runs to win 6-5. The nailbiter propels the Americans to the semis and sends the Puerto Ricans home (or, more than likely, to their respective Spring Training sites).
The ninth inning began with PR scoring once to increase their lead to 5-3. Then Shane Victorino led off the bottom half of the inning with a hit off teammate JC Romero. Two batters later, Derek Jeter provided the first out on a hard hit liner to right, advancing the Flyin' Hawaiian to third.
Brian Roberts then stole second with only one out, making Jeter's lineout as good as a bunt. Later, with the bases full, Kevin Youkilis walked a run home, bringing up Wright who gave Team USA the big hit they needed.
If you missed this game, you missed a great one. That hit will be one of the classics you'll see in years to come to promote this tournament, much like all the classic last second shots you're sure to see this weekend for the start of the NCAA tournament.
Incredible. Go team USA!
Disclaimer: Excellent managing job throughout the tournament by Cardinals 3B coach Jose Oquendo who will be a big league manager one day. And Yadier Molina, in limited time behind the plate in this tournament, had some big moments when he saw action and continues to play superb defensively.
