It was far from pretty but the Cardinals pulled out a closer-than-it-should've-been victory over the Mets 9-8. As I wrote in the previous post, this game was available on television so I had some thoughts that you can check out below.

Wellemeyer wasn't that good, but no one really looked good off the mound today other than PJ Walters and Trever Miller. Jason Motte threw really hard and guys couldn't touch him, but he was all over the place and looked nervous. Hopefully that will taper off, as he has as good a shot as anyone to win the 9th inning job.

With a 9-4 lead going into the bottom of the 9th, last year's late inning struggles carried over into this game, ending with a 9-8 score. Adam Ottavino and Royce Ring both threw in the inning and neither was any good.

I've been pretty impressed with Allen Craig so far. No one can get him out. Maybe with a year or two more in the minors he could be pretty good. Rick Ankiel also made an unbelievable catch in center field that likely saved a run or two.

Overall a good win but there's a lot this team needs to improve upon. One thing's for sure...it was really great to watch the Cardinals live today.
