Carpenter's new tools

The man above threw a complete game 2-hitter against Roger Clemens and the 2005 (maybe 2004?) Astros that I consider the best baseball game I've ever seen in person.

Since about that time, fans in St. Louis have looked for any resemblance that number 29. After an Opening Day injury to start the world title defense in 2007, Carp has hardly thrown off a mound; much less given the Cardinals the hurler they thought they'd have for several years after his Cy Young award.

Today, though, he threw live BP to Cardinal hitters that included Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel and word out of Jupiter is that his stuff looked very good. His outing was fairly highly anticipated and -- while he left plenty of room for improvement -- I would imagine everyone from Dave Duncan to TLR to the bartenders at Hrabosky's felt a little relief today, knowing the one-time ace may still have enough to give the rotation a nice little 1-2 punch with Adam Wainwright.
